Some Reflections on the Session «Sociological Aspects of Children's Play Activity» (Third Forum of the International Sociological Association (ISA): ‘ THE FUTURES WE WANT: Global Sociology and the Struggles for a Better World ’).

One of the major events in the world of sociology - the Third Forum of the International Sociological Association (ISA) “THE FUTURES WE WANT: Global Sociology and the Struggles for a Better World” - took place in Austria, Vienna (10-14 July, 2016).
More than 4000 scientists from different countries took part in this event, because it is a great opportunity to discuss different problems, to share your ideas, to share the results of conducted researches, to see the perspectives of the further development of the science. And, certainly, the Forum is the place to meet friends and colleagues.

In my blog, I would like to share my thoughts and reflections on the session «Sociological Aspects of Children's Play Activity», the organizer and chair of which I was. (http://www.theworldofnursery.com/2016/08/3d-isa-forum-of-sociology-july-10-14.html)
I also want to make conclusions why the research on different aspects of children’s play activity will help to understand the sense of play better.
The session “Sociological Aspects of Children's Play Activity’ took place at the University of Vienna, on  Monday, 11 July 2016.
It was decided to organize this session, because the problem of children’s play is becoming more and more actual not only in the scientific sphere; the play is also interesting for parents, for practical workers (for kindergarten teachers, for school teachers, for lecturers, for architects, for designers, etc.)
Play of children is not only a way to investigate new horizons; it is the way to establish a better future and a better world for our children. Everybody knows that every child has the right to play. Worldwide programs, competitions, campaigns show that educational services and the “large industry working for childhood” need sociological researches. Owing to the sociological researches, we will be able to understand which educational programs work well, what problems the children have and we will understand the sociological and philosophical sense of play activity

Five papers were presented during this session. All of them were devoted to the children’s play. If you want to read the abstracts of the presented papers, you can follow the links:
I want to thank all contributors and presenters of the session “Sociological Aspects of Children's Play Activity’.

Some reflections.

1. Wide social and economic processes influence the life of children and their play and games. It is necessary to recognize, that, speaking about children's play, we would like to avoid discussing the material aspects of this question, but existing economic forces (directly or indirectly) touches an every child. It can be said that in the conditions of the increasing commercialization of childhood the children, living in the one city, live in different cities: they have access to different playgrounds, they have different toys (or they have not toys), they eat different products, etc. There is a still open question for all of us: “How can we realize the right of children to play freely in the context of different social, economic, political processes?”
 2. The questions of children's participation, the control of adults, the degree of freedom and the responsibility are the problems which should be studied in the sphere of children's play by the sociology of childhood.
Playgrounds, children's movements are discussed worldwide. In various social networks the enthusiasts create groups to share history, news, photos and new projects. The necessity of the sociology of childhood to study practical aspects of children's play activity, to learn how it is realized in the different countries of the world and to reveal the difficulties of children and adults in the realization of the right to play, - is simply obvious.
3. Not only scientists ask the question, whether military toys influence tragical events, which, unfortunately, we observed among children and teenagers. What is more important: the game (toy) or a wider social context of the socialization of child? What about «a good risk», which is so necessary for children’s play, including play with weapons? All these questions demand the further detailed consideration and the analysis.
4. The problems of interaction between the child and  the computer, the degree of presence of the child during the development of the technological product should be discussed in sociology, because in the century of technologies we must understand how they influence a life of people, especially of children.
Owing to the last events and the distribution of the certain app among people of different ages, the problem of the use of different gadgets is becoming more and more actual. Any good ideas, novelties can be superseded by the commercialization and the desire to earn money. Because of it, we must research how all technical novelties are reflected in the behaviour of our children.
5. The question of children’s play is quite new for the sociology of childhood and has a lot of perspectives for the development.

I want to thank the organizers of the Forum for the harmonious and precise work of the sessions, for the interesting excursion in the city of Vein, which I dreamed of visiting, for the opportunity to visit a fine concert Vienna Residence Orchestra.
